Welcome to our homepage for work completed during 2009/2010 linked to ‘Flour Babies’, Anne Fine’s award winning book.
Flour Babies is an inspirational story that deals with issues around gender and single-parent families in an engaging and intelligent manner.
The blurb gives a really good introduction to the book…

Prediction
Before we started to read the book we looked carefully at the front cover and the blurb. We predicted what the story might be about.

Work linked to Chapter 1
After reading the chapter we looked back and did a comprehension activity. There were lots of characters mentioned. Some were actually in the story, others were made reference to. We sorted the characters into two groups.
Then we did a short writing task based on the main idea of the chapter – that a teacher has to tell a badly behaved class something he does not want to tell them!

Work linked to Chapter 2
For reading comprehension we did some multiple choice reading comprehension questions and then we had a series of statements to sequence.
Then we wrote an entry in Mr Cartright’s diary. We also wrote an entry in Simon's diary.

Work linked to Chapter 3
This time, for reading comprehension, we were answering true/false questions.
Our writing task was to explain, in the third person, why we were unique! This writing was inspired by an extract from the text.

More soon…
Let chaos reign.
When the annual school science fair comes around, Mr Cartright's class don't get to work on the Soap Factory, the Maggot Farm or the Exploding Custard Tins. To their intense disgust they get the Flour Babies — sweet little six-pound bags of flour that must be cared for at all times.
Throughout the topic we used the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) to do additional activities.
We voted on our favourite characters and we used a weblog to discuss them - the discussion was with our own class and with a class at Mandeville!
